Why Is My Air Conditioner Spitting Water?

1. Clogged Condensate Drain Line
This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Your AC pulls humidity out of the air and drains it away through a narrow PVC condensate line. Because that line stays damp and dark all summer, algae and biofilm build up inside it, and dust pulled through the return traps against the slime until the line closes off entirely.
With nowhere to go, water fills the drain pan and overflows — spitting from the vents, dripping near the indoor unit, or staining the ceiling below an attic air handler.
What you’ll notice: water pooling around the indoor unit, a musty smell from the vents, or a system that shuts itself off unexpectedly (many units have a float switch that cuts power when the pan fills).
What to do: a wet/dry vacuum on the outdoor end of the drain line clears a partial clog, and pouring a cup of distilled vinegar into the access port a few times a season keeps algae down — check your unit’s manual first, since a few manufacturers advise against acidic cleaners on certain drain pans. If the line is fully blocked or the pan has already overflowed, call a technician.
2. Frozen Evaporator Coil
Your evaporator coil is supposed to be cold, not frozen. When ice forms across it, the drain system can’t keep up as that ice melts, and the excess water spills past the pan.
Freezing almost always traces back to one of two things: not enough warm air moving across the coil, or not enough refrigerant in the system.
- Dirty air filter — restricts airflow so the coil gets too cold. The one cause on this list you can fix yourself.
- Blocked or closed vents — same effect, often from furniture or rugs covering returns.
- Low refrigerant — refrigerant isn’t consumed, so low levels mean a leak somewhere in the system.
- Restricted ductwork — leaking or undersized ductwork starves the coil of airflow.
What you’ll notice: visible ice on the refrigerant line or coil, weak airflow from the vents, and a system running constantly without cooling the house.
What to do: switch the system to “fan only” and let the ice thaw completely, which can take several hours. Replace the filter. If it freezes again, stop running it — a frozen coil forces liquid refrigerant back toward the compressor, and a compressor replacement is one of the most expensive repairs on the system.
3. Improper Installation
Condensate drains by gravity, which means the drain pan has to be level and the drain line has to slope continuously downward — at least an eighth of an inch of fall per foot of run, though most installers aim for more. If the unit was set slightly off level, or the line runs flat or uphill at any point, water sits in the pan instead of draining and eventually spills over.
What you’ll notice: a system that has spit or dripped water since it was installed, rather than one that developed the problem over time. Water often appears on one specific side of the unit.
What to do: this needs a technician. Sometimes it’s a matter of shimming the unit or re-pitching the line; other times the drain has to be rerouted. If the original installation was this far off, it’s worth having the full job inspected — improper leveling often accompanies other shortcuts. 4. Oversized System
Bigger is not better with air conditioning. An oversized unit cools the air to the thermostat setpoint quickly and shuts off — a pattern called short cycling — which sounds efficient but isn’t.
Removing humidity takes sustained runtime. A system that runs in short bursts never operates long enough to pull moisture out of the air, so humidity stays high indoors while condensation collects faster than the drain can handle it.
What you’ll notice: the house feels cold but clammy, the system cycles on and off every few minutes, and energy bills run higher than expected for the amount of cooling you’re getting.
What to do: correcting this generally means replacing the system with one properly sized by a Manual J load calculation. In the meantime, a whole-house dehumidifier handles the moisture your AC can’t. If the unit is also aging, it’s worth weighing repair versus replacement before spending more on repairs.
5. Dirty Evaporator Coil
Dust that slips past the filter settles on the evaporator coil and hardens into an insulating layer. That layer blocks heat transfer and forces air through the remaining clean sections at higher velocity — fast enough to blow condensate droplets off the fins and into the ductwork before they can drain. Debris also washes down into the pan, where it contributes to the drain clogs described above. Left long enough, a dirty coil freezes over, which brings you back to cause number two.
What you’ll notice: gradually weaker cooling, longer run times, and rising energy bills over a season or two rather than a sudden failure. If dust is reaching the coil, it’s also circulating through your home, so worsening indoor air quality often shows up alongside the cooling problems.
What to do: coil cleaning isn’t a DIY job. The aluminum fins bend under light pressure, and reaching the coil usually means removing panels and sometimes the blower assembly. A professional cleaning restores heat transfer and eliminates the condensate carryover.
Prevention is cheaper than the fix. Changing filters on schedule and booking annual AC maintenance keeps the coil clean and the drain clear — the two causes behind most water-spitting calls we get. A few drops around the indoor unit usually means a partially clogged drain line. Shut the system off at the thermostat before you do anything else — running it further pushes water into drywall, insulation, and the blower motor, turning a service call into a repair bill.
